About the Zager Family
Victor and Muriel Zager were a remarkable couple whose lives were defined by achievement, adventure, and deep commitment to their community.
Victor Zager (1928–2008), born in Brooklyn, New York, served his country during the Korean War before building a distinguished career as an attorney and industrialist. As a partner in Industrial Coated Products of America, he helped establish a manufacturing plant in Bristol, Tennessee, that supplied cutting-edge textile products to the U.S. Armed Forces — work that made him a nationally recognized expert in his field. Beyond business, Victor was a devoted leader in the Jewish community, serving as president of multiple synagogues across the country and administering over 600 congregations through the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. His community leadership took him to the highest levels, including moderating a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in Jerusalem. A generous philanthropist, he endowed a Diversity Lectureship at East Tennessee State University and a Holocaust Studies chair at Emory and Henry College in memory of his father.
Muriel Kagan Zager (1933–2025) carved out an equally extraordinary path as one of the first women to cover Israel, Iran, and Lebanon as a foreign correspondent. A trusted voice for the Bristol Herald Courier and the Washington County News, her reporting brought clarity to complex Middle Eastern affairs for decades. Her experiences abroad also inspired five novels, including The Faithful, a National Book Award nominee. With a quick wit and boundless curiosity, Muriel continued traveling the world well into her nineties.
Together, the Zagers co-owned regional newspapers, syndicated columns internationally, and shared a life of remarkable breadth — from the textile plants of East Tennessee to press conferences in Jerusalem. Their legacy is one of intellectual ambition, civic generosity, and an enduring love of the wider world.
